Tyler and Abbey have been studying Geography by reading Paddle-to-the-Sea by Holling C. Holling. It is a book that traces the route of a little carved canoe through the Great Lakes. Below are the poems they wrote to put into their notebooks. The poems spell "PADDLE" at the left.
Passing through the lakes and rivers
Adding memories to my mind
Drifting toward the sea
Dodging dangers left and right
Listening to songs all night
Entering brooks and ponds, always getting closer to the sea
By Tyler Rozanski 1-04
Paddle-to-the-Sea is moving
At a steady speed
Dipping up side down and up side right
Dodging with logs
Loving the sweet air
Entering the great waters
By Abbey Rozanski 1-04

I received a very nice email from someone who has visited our website and they made this suggestion:
<<I wonder if you might be interested in sharing children's books about your part of America with the public? Do you have a collection? It seems that those who live there might have a feel for literature which best tells the rest of us about your home.>>
Well, I could not resist this!
If you are doing BF's Paddle-to-the-Sea, these are GREAT companions!
So here is my *Our Favorites* list:
Next Spring an Oriole--Gloria Whelan (who actually lives in our town!!!)
Night of the Full Moon--Gloria Whelan
JAMS AND JELLIES BY HOLLY AND NELLIE--Gloria Whelan
M is for Mitten--Wonderful Alphabet book that is packed w/info!--this book began our months of study on Henry Ford!
Great Lakes--By Gilchrist--If you can get your hands on this, it is WELL worth it! The Illustrations are Yummy!
The Mighty Soo--By Judson--500 years at Sault Ste. Marie--Loving it!
Copper Toed Boots--Marguerite De Angeli--I grew up in the same hometown as she and our city library is still named after her!! I actually met her at a hometown parade once and had my picture taken with her before she died--thrilling!
Many of her other books are set in the lower thumb area of Michigan....love them ALL~
The Bee Tree--A FIAR title--A beloved book in our home!

Paddle-to-the-Sea--Holling C. Holling

Once Upon an Isle--Paintings and companion stories by Howard Sivertson--WOW! This has become a favorite!! It is a compliation of short stories with BEAUTIFUL paintings to go along. These stories are of the olden days when just fishing families lived on Isle Royale. The stories are great/humorous/sad and unusual---the paintings are just like owning an art book! Highly recomended--some of the residents do drink, so if that bothers you, then there may be a few stories that you skip. MOst are just of the wonderful bonds formed between island people and of the Overwhelming Moose population at that time--they were everywhere! If you visit today, they are still seen frequently! (author/painter grew up on the island)BTW, this is still in print!
A Place Called Home: Michigan's Mill Creek Story--By Jane Panagopoulas--Great picture book of the family who began Mill Creek--They stayed on the mainland to begin the Mill and watched all their friends and soldiers leave for Mackinac Island~Great story!
Through the Locks--By Walter Buehr--
